A new Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention will address the increasing rates of suicide across Wisconsin, according to a Wednesday statement.

Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, created the task force. More than 700 Wisconsinites die by suicide every year, with men between the ages of 45 and 54 having the highest rate.

Rep. Joan Ballweg, R-Markesan, will chair the committee.

“Over the past year, my office has been researching this epidemic,” she said in a statement. “With heightened public awareness and increased media attention, the time is right to aggressively study and work to remedy this devastating trend.”

Other members of the task force will be named soon.

The task force plans hearings across the state, with policy recommendations due this fall. Part of their work will include evaluating the state’s current resources and programs dedicated to suicide prevention.

They’re also charged with finding ways to help at-risk individuals like farmers and youth. And they’ll work to identify barriers to care.
