WPA Advocacy Day 2025: Advocating for Mental Health at the Capitol
On March 13, 2025, members of the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association gathered in Madison for WPA’s Advocacy Day—an important opportunity to unite voices in support of mental health policy across the state.
The day began with a strategic policy briefing, where members reviewed WPA’s legislative priorities and prepared for meaningful conversations with lawmakers. This year’s key issues included:
Support for the Legislative Study Committee on Emergency Detention
Psychiatric Advance Directives
Tax incentives to attract and retain new psychiatrists in Wisconsin
Continued and expanded funding for school-based mental health programs
WPA members then made their way to the State Capitol to meet directly with legislators from their districts. In a special highlight of the day, the entire group was joined by Representative Clint Moses and Representative, who engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the mental health needs of communities across Wisconsin and the importance of evidence-based policy solutions.
These meetings served as a powerful reminder of the role psychiatrists play in shaping public policy and advocating for systems that support patients, providers, and public mental health outcomes.
WPA extends its gratitude to all members who participated and to the legislators who took the time to listen and collaborate. Advocacy Day 2025 was a clear success—reinforcing the WPA’s commitment to ensuring psychiatry has a strong and informed voice at the Capitol.
