Analysis: State suicide rate rose by 40 percent between 2000 and 2017

The suicide rate in Wisconsin rose 40 percent between 2000 and 2017, according to data released by the Department of Health Services Tuesday.

The agency published the research as a preview of an upcoming report that seeks to guide state action to reduce suicide attempts and deaths.

According to the data, suicide rates were highest among those between the ages of 45 and 54 between 2013 and 2017.

Of all deaths by firearms during that period, 71 percent were suicide deaths.

In 2017, the majority of those who died by suicide in Wisconsin were male, and suicide was the second leading cause of death among adolescents in the state. Read more
