Justin Schoen, MD, FAPA
WPA President

Having just completed another Executive Council meeting and the WPA Fall Conference, I’m always impressed by the work that we are doing on so many different fronts. I also had the pleasure of talking with many of you throughout the meeting. It’s an honor as I get to know you personally, as well as professionally.

The conference was a great success! Doctors Tony Thrasher and John Schneider brought in an excellent group of speakers including a panel presentation that was described by one attendee as “refreshing.” I would like to thank everyone who helped coordinate the event, as well as the presenters and all of the attendees and exhibitors for making it all come together.

As the campaign season is just getting rolling, so is our newly formed Political Action Committee. As anyone involved in advocacy will recognize, the results of the election have a large impact on how we proceed with different agendas. To start, we are going to distribute funds in a bipartisan manner. Please watch for future updates from Doctor Janis, Chair of the PAC, and from our lobbyist, Eric Jensen, Jensen Government Relations.

We are working to get the next wave of students engaged in the excellent mentorship program that Doctor Marcus initiated a few years back. Please consider volunteering time to interact with students as a mentor, and if you’re interested, sign up.

As Immediate Past-President, Doctor Marcus is also the Chair of the Nominating Committee and will be working to get nominations for the upcoming WPA election season. If you are interested in serving in leadership, please let us know.

Overall, the state of the WPA is sound. We are doing well financially and our membership continues to be stable. Our next annual meeting, titled “Providing Stability in an Unstable World: Updates in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder” will take place at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake on March 14-16. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with Doctor Saul Levin, CEO of the APA, who will kick-off the conference. Hopefully, I will get a chance to see you there. During the event, we will have our annual business meeting, which will be my last as the President of the WPA. Serving in this role has been an incredible honor for me.

I hope you’re getting to enjoy the fall colors, and as always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
